Meet the Alpha Males of J.A.C.K. Sanctuary

Males play a large role in the social structure of chimpanzee troops–including at the sanctuary! Chimpanzees live in a patriarchal society that is led by a single, dominant male known as the ‘alpha.’ The alpha male controls everything from resources to group stability. It is their job to build bonds, maintain peace, mitigate conflict, and protect their troops.

J.A.C.K. Primate Sanctuary is home to three chimpanzee troops, each led by an alpha male: Tommy, Tika, and Coco. Like people, each has their own personality and ruling style.

Tommy is a big-hearted, natural-born leader who is fiercely protective of the more vulnerable members of his troop.

Tika is very territorial with a strong personality. He is not afraid to throw stones at anyone who dares to approach his troop.

Coco is a big ball of muscle who continuously proves his strength among the other big boys in his troop.

Soon, J.A.C.K. Primate Sanctuary will have to look into introducing a male into the nursery group–bringing the total number of alpha males to 4. This will be a very meticulous and timely process to ensure the safety of all involved. As it stands Maika, a dominant female, is filling the role of mother to 9 babies. It is important that the team chooses a male who will not only get along with Maika, but also gently build bonds with each of the infants while simultaneously teaching them manners and proper chimpanzee behavior. This is a crucial step in the rehabilitation process so that one day Mpo, Linda, Cal, Sana, Fwa, Bere, Kindu, Lucy, and Tami can live a normal life in the wild among their own kind.

If you would like to help contribute to the rehabilitation of the 9 infants, please consider supporting our current campaign to build a 4th enriching outdoor habitat for their troop.
